First State Rural Trauma Team Course in Hettinger

Sanford coordinated the first Rural Trauma Team Development Course (RTTDC) in Hettinger on May 18, the first course to be offered in the state. There were 23 participants ranging from physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and EMS providers. The Course Coordinator for the SW Region is Amy Eberle, Trauma Coordinator at Sanford Bismarck. Instructors included Jeanette Viney, MD, Sanford Bismarck, Trauma Medical Director, Justin Reisenauer, MD, ED Physician, Randy Szlabick, MD, Altru Health Grand Forks, Derek Kane, MD, St. Alexius Bismarck, and Howard Walth, RN, St. Alexius Bismarck.

The Rural Trauma Team Development Course (RTTDC) was developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT) to help rural hospitals with development of their trauma teams. The course consists of classroom lecture along with patient scenarios that are simulated using the hospital’s emergency department and equipment. It is hoped the course will improve the quality of care in the rural hospital by developing a timely, organized, and rational response to the care of the trauma patient utilizing the resources that they have available.

The goal is to provide 2-3 courses a year in the SW region. Right now they are offered on a first come first serve basis. For more information contact Amy Eberle at 701.323.2939 or Amy.Eberle@SanfordHealth.org .
