WRHS Foundation Keeps Its Word – Gives Half Back To Area Communities!

FRW Thank You 2017The West River Health Services Foundation has kept its word by giving half of its “Fun Run & Walk” net proceeds back to the area community. Prior to the 4th of July, the Foundation was busy signing up participants and at the same time, selling $5 raffle tickets for their 29th Annual “Fun Run & Walk” Event, promising to give half of the net proceeds back to the area community.  After selling over 1,000 raffle tickets, the Foundation’s “Fun Run & Walk” committee was able to give $3,500 back! In staying true to their belief in supporting active events and/or equipment that creates good health, fitness and wellness, the Foundation found five outstanding area causes to support.

The WRHS Foundation is proud to support the renovations at the Hettinger Swimming Pool with a $2,000 gift. The Hettinger Swimming Pool is an important part of our local community – where area kids can go to learn the fundamentals of swimming and enjoy their summers with their friends at the pool; plus, it is a terrific place for adults to exercise, not to mention an exciting part of physical education classes at the Hettinger School. Many local businesses and families have gotten behind the pool drive – and now, so has West River Health Services Foundation!

In addition to the gift to the pool, the “Fun Run & Walk” provided $500 for the Hettinger Golf Association’s Youth Golf Program. With a jumpstart for 74 youth golfers at the Hettinger Country Club this past spring, the committee felt this would be a good use of the funds raised – to keep our youth learning and exercising outdoors, while playing the great game of golf. Another $500 was distributed to Badlands Ministries, as almost 1,800 area children are involved in their summer on-site, day camp and community outreach programs. Many of their daily activities for the kids there include walking, hiking, running games, and swimming. Plus, Badlands Ministries hosts other specialty camps focusing on adventure, horsemanship and golfing.

Once again, for the third straight year, the Hettinger Backpack Food Program was selected for a gift – this year $300. This terrific program makes sure that those kids who need extra food on the weekends receive it. Although maybe this isn’t an activity – it certainly is important that our area youth have enough nutrition to be active. We also allocated $200 to The Granary, the official home of the “Fun Run & Walk.”

As well as giving half to the public, West River kept $3,500 within its organization. $1,000 will be distributed toward the purchase of a new healthy, vending machine within WRHS. This will allow families members of patients and employees the opportunity to purchase fresh and healthy snacks post cafeteria hours. In addition, $750 was allocated toward bike racks on the WRHS Campus – providing a place for employees to park their bicycles during the warmer months, when they can get some exercise to and from work. $500 each was distributed to the WRHS Fitness Center, the West River Ambulance Service, and the Western Horizons Care Center. The hope is that each of these entities will try to place these funds toward health and wellness activities within each of their respective areas.  In addition, $250 was given to Western Horizons Assisted Living for their tenant’s wellness activities.

The “Fun Run & Walk” Committee would like to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers, participants, and raffle ticket sellers/buyers. Without you, we’d never be able to raise the funds and distribute them to such worthwhile causes. You are all invited to our 30th Annual “Fun Run & Walk” on July 4th, 2018. Onward!
